Bitkom on today’s ECJ ruling on Facebook Like buttons

The European Court of Justice ruled today that website operators are jointly responsible for compliance with data protection regulations if they have integrated Facebook ‘s Like button plug-in on their website and personal data of website visitors is thereby directly forwarded to Facebook.

“With its decision, the ECJ is placing enormous  rcs database responsibility on thousands of website operators – from small travel blogs to online megastores and the portals of major publishers. It’s not just those who have integrated the Like button who must now act. The ruling will affect all common social media plugins.

Must now enter into agreements with the main benefits of marketing automation  Facebook and other social media providers, otherwise they risk liability. And it’s doubtful whether the required detailed information about Like buttons on every corresponding website will actually have any effect.

Information about cookies, the privacy policy and the terms and conditions already take up. A lot of space on websites and are only formally acknowledged by the vast majority of people.

Following this ECJ ruling

The bureaucratic burden for website operators list provider  will increase significantly. At the same time, the level of data protection will de facto hardly change. As practical two-click solutions for such plugins are already in use today.

With these solutions, data transfer only occurs if a user specifically activates this function before liking. For many website operators , Like buttons are important for reaching internet users.
