On Monday, very mild and increasingly unstable air was brought to the Alpine region on the front of a trough over Western Europe. On Monday evening, a cold front caus large-scale lifting, causing a real line of thunderstorms, a so-call “squall line”, to develop over France.

While the thunderstorm front hit western Switzerland

After a brief period of calm weather on Tuesday morning, a low pressure system over Scandinavia direct another cold front over Switzerland. The southwest winds increas again with the cold front. The wind spes reach 60 to 90 km/h in the lowlands and 90 to 120 km/h in the mountains. However, the strongest gusts were sometimes only record behind the front in the unstable, layer cold air at high altitudes.
